How to tell allergies from infection — and what to try first at home.
Itching has three common causes: parasites, allergies, and infection. They often overlap, which is why home guesses miss.

If the skin is red, oozing, or smells yeasty, that's likely an infection on top of an allergy and needs prescription treatment. Don't reach for human creams; many contain ingredients toxic to pets.
For mild seasonal itching, regular baths with a gentle oatmeal shampoo and an omega-3 supplement help many dogs. If symptoms last more than a week, book a visit.
