Calming a stressed cat at home

Small environmental changes that make a big difference for anxious cats.

Cats hide stress well. Hiding more than usual, over-grooming, litter-box accidents, and sudden hissing are all signals worth paying attention to.

Start with vertical space. A tall cat tree or a cleared shelf gives your cat somewhere to retreat and observe — a basic feline need that's easy to overlook.

Add one litter box per cat plus one extra, scoop daily, and place them in quiet, low-traffic spots. Try a synthetic feline pheromone diffuser in the room your cat spends most time in; many owners see a noticeable shift within two weeks.

If anxiety persists or escalates, talk to a vet. Underlying pain (especially dental or urinary) often shows up first as behavior change.
