Frenchie allergies: they start from within

Why your French Bulldog's itchy skin, ears, and paws often trace back to the gut.

French Bulldogs are prone to allergies, but the skin isn't where the problem begins. Chronic ear infections, red paws, scabby skin, and a yeasty smell are often signs of an immune system reacting to something deeper — usually diet, yeast overgrowth, or environmental triggers.

The gut-skin axis matters. High-carb kibble can feed yeast and disrupt gut bacteria, which then shows up as itchy skin, paw licking, and recurrent ear infections. Many Frenchies improve when switched to a minimally processed, low-carb diet with fewer inflammatory ingredients.

Watch for the classic pattern: red, inflamed paws with compulsive licking, head shaking and ear discharge, red patches or scabs along the belly and folds, and a persistent musty odor. These usually mean allergy plus secondary yeast or bacteria, not allergy alone.

Don't manage it alone long-term. Baths, wipes, and supplements help, but recurring symptoms need a vet to rule out infection and build a plan — often food trial, targeted probiotics, omega-3s, or prescription treatment. Book a visit before the skin barrier breaks down further.
